PMD Forecasts Heavy Rains Across Sindh, Authorities Warn of Urban Flooding

KARACHI, Sept 6, 2025 — The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast for intermittent heavy rains across Sindh from September 7 to 10, raising concerns over potential urban flooding in low-lying areas of Karachi and other cities.

A low-pressure system currently situated over Madhya Pradesh, India, is expected to move towards Rajasthan and subsequently into Sindh by September 6. This system is anticipated to bring strong monsoon currents into the region, leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall across various districts of Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Badin, and Mirpurkhas. The PMD has warned that these conditions may result in urban flooding in low-lying areas due to the city’s inadequate drainage infrastructure.

Urban Flooding Risks

Karachi’s vulnerability to urban flooding is exacerbated by several factors:

• Overburdened Drainage Systems: The city’s drainage infrastructure is often insufficient to handle heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging and flooding in various neighborhoods.
• Encroachment on Natural Waterways: Development over natural drainage channels has obstructed water flow, increasing the risk of localized flooding during heavy rains.
• Climate Change: Altered weather patterns and increased rainfall intensity due to climate change contribute to the frequency and severity of urban flooding events.

Government Preparedness and Public Advisory

In response to the forecasted rains, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued advisories for urban flooding in cities including Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad, and Lahore. The NDMA has recommended the following measures:

• Clearing of Drainage Systems: Ensuring that all stormwater drains are clear of debris to facilitate the swift flow of rainwater.
• Public Awareness Campaigns: Informing residents about potential flooding risks and safety measures to take during heavy rains.
• Emergency Response Plans: Mobilizing rescue and relief teams to be on standby for immediate response in case of flooding incidents.
