Local Mechanic Caught Abusing Child Apprentice Sparks Outrage
A shocking case of child abuse in a motorcycle repair shop has triggered nationwide anger after a disturbing image surfaced online. The picture shows a young apprentice being violently assaulted by his master, who not only beat him but also used a spark plug to administer electric shocks.
The incident highlights the dark reality of child labour in Pakistan’s motorcycle and auto workshops, where thousands of children work as apprentices under dangerous and exploitative conditions. Rights groups say cases of child abuse at mechanic shops in Pakistan are alarmingly common, yet often go unreported.
Child Labour and Abuse in Workshops Across Pakistan
Despite laws banning hazardous child labour, enforcement remains weak. Children as young as seven are frequently employed in motorcycle repair shops, exposed to both harsh working conditions and violence from their employers. According to Punjab’s Home Department, 1,956 cases of child abuse were recorded in the first half of 2025 alone, including 950 cases of sexual abuse. Experts warn that countless others involving physical violence go undocumented.
Past cases have shown similar patterns: apprentices beaten for mistakes, locked inside workshops, and in some cases hospitalized due to severe injuries. Activists stress that such abuse is not only a criminal offense but also a violation of basic human rights.
Calls for Action and Stronger Enforcement
Child protection advocates are urging police to swiftly identify and arrest the perpetrator in the Lahore case. They also call for nationwide inspections of mechanic shops and stronger implementation of labour laws to protect children from exploitation.
“The abuse of children in workplaces has become normalized in many areas. This cycle must be broken through strict action and education,” said a child rights worker.
The latest case serves as a grim reminder that unless meaningful reforms are introduced, Pakistan’s children will continue to face violence and exploitation in hidden corners of society.
