Hundreds of Israeli Reserve Soldiers Refuse Duty Over Gaza Offensive

TEL AVIV: Hundreds of Israeli reserve soldiers said on Tuesday they would not report for duty, describing the military campaign to capture Gaza City as unlawful.

Speaking at a press conference in Tel Aviv, the reservists said their group has grown to more than 365 members and continues to expand. Many noted that while they had previously taken part in the conflict, they would no longer serve if called again.

The reservists argued that a ground occupation of Gaza would endanger hostages, civilians and Israeli forces, and accused the government of prolonging the war for political purposes.

“We consider refusal to serve our patriotic duty, and we demand accountability from our leaders,” the group said in a statement.

Israel’s military has begun calling up tens of thousands of reserve troops in recent weeks to support its offensive in Gaza City. Reports estimate the numbers include up to 60,000 mobilized and additional service extensions for 20,000 others. The operation has entered Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, triggering civilian displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and rising casualties among Palestinians.

Not to Forget

International pressure on Israel is growing. Belgium announced this week it will recognise a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly and impose sanctions on Israel. Several European governments have urged restraint, while Israel’s own military has warned that a ground occupation could put both hostages and soldiers at risk.

The refusal of duty by hundreds of reservists highlights growing divisions inside Israel as the Gaza offensive continues.
