Istanbul Earthquake: 6.2 Magnitude Tremor Shakes City, People Spend Night Outside

A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit near Istanbul on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, causing panic in the city. The epicentre was near Silivri, about 80 km west of Istanbul. Many buildings shook, and frightened residents ran out into the streets. Over 150 people were injured, mostly while trying to escape from high places. Thankfully, no deaths or major building damage were reported.

Many residents gathered in parks and public squares, choosing to spend the night outside to avoid possible aftershocks. In Besiktas, students and families shared their fears. “I packed my essentials and won’t go back tonight,” said one student. Another worried their building wasn’t safe enough. Experts also raised concerns about whether a stronger quake could follow.

Authorities confirmed that the city’s water, gas, and electricity supplies were not affected. One old building collapsed in Fatih, but no injuries were reported. Schools will remain closed until Friday. Open areas have been prepared for public use.

The quake reminded many of past disasters in Turkey, including the deadly 2023 earthquakes. Global leaders, including President Erdogan and Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif, expressed their support and concern.
