Hundreds Protest in Karachi Over Cholistan Canal Project and Sindh’s Water Crisis

Hundreds of students and civil society members protested in Karachi on Tuesday against the controversial canal project launched in Punjab’s Cholistan region, warning it could spark severe water shortages and civil unrest in Sindh, particularly Karachi. Led by the Save Indus Students Alliance and Karachi Bachao Tehreek, protesters marched from Teen Talwar to Fawara Chowk, accusing the government of depriving Sindh of its water rights. Activists emphasized that most of Karachi’s water comes from the Indus River and further canal constructions could cut off vital water supply to the city’s Keenjhar Lake, worsening the existing crisis.

Protesters called the project an existential threat and a “theft of land and water,” blaming capitalist and state interests for prioritizing Punjab’s irrigation needs over Sindh’s survival. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah urged protestors to avoid blocking roads, while PPP lawmakers walked out of the Senate in protest. The Sindh Assembly had earlier passed a unanimous resolution opposing the canals.
