24 Killed in Pahalgam Tourist Attack, India’s Worst Civilian Tragedy in Years

At least 24 people were killed when gunmen opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, in what officials are calling the worst civilian attack in years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the act, vowing justice for the victims. The attackers targeted mostly Indian tourists, with several wounded rushed to hospitals. No group has claimed responsibility, though Kashmir has seen decades of insurgency.

The attack comes amid growing tourism in the region, which saw 3.5 million visitors in 2024. Leaders including Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned the violence, while Interior Minister Amit Shah announced immediate action against the perpetrators.
